BREAKING NEWS: BYE BYE BAKERY

All good things must come to an end. The neighborhood clubhouse known as Tompkins Square Bakery will be shutting its doors on 10th street at the end of the month to become a wedding cake only business based out of the home kitchens of co-owners Matt and Randy.

Tompkins Square Bakery opened five years ago on Tompkins Square Park primarily as a cake company that also sold cookies, cupcakes, scones and croissants. And maybe bread pudding or special ham and cheese croissants, if you were lucky. Matt the Baker (right) also hosted impromptu dinner get togethers and backyard movie parties during the summer.

In addition to DJing, I've worked at the bakery for over a year now. While I'll be glad to get the extra sleep between Friday and Saturday night gigs, I'll miss the camaraderie forged between unlikely characters such as the Frederico the next door pizza guy and our French friend Ludo (both pictured left).

Cakes will still be available for order through the same bakery phone number but without the store front, the neighborhood will be a little less sweet.
